Setting up your sewing machine correctly is the first step to great sewing! Let’s get that machine out of the box and start stitching! Hi, I’m Angela Wolf! Let me show you how to get the most from your machine from very start. Most machines come with a range of accessories – feet, tools, needles, bobbins and thread accessories. They should all be listed in your manual – so make sure everything you need is there.

This is a flat bed attachment. I leave it on most of the time and then remove it for sewing cuffs or sleeves so the fabric can wrap around this arm. On some machines there’s also a wide table – this is great for sewing larger projects. Check out the accessory compartment – this is a great storage area for your tools. If you are like me, you can’t wait to get sewing! There are really only four things we need to do to get going: insert the needle, wind the bobbin, thread the machine and attach the presser foot. Take a look at this sewing machine needle. There is a flat section and then rounded. This helps to guide the needle in for your specific machine. Locate the screw attached to the needle area and loosen it up enough to slide the needle in place. In this machine you can onlly insert the needle wihth the flat area is facing the back. Keep turning the needle until it slide into place. Be sure to slide the needle up as far as it will go, then tighten the screw. See how easy it is to change the needle! Be sure to change the needle often so prevent skipped stitches. Now let’s wind the bobbin. There are many different bobbin sizes, not to mention plastic or metal, so be sure to only use bobbins that are for your specific sewing machine This machine has an automatic bobbin winder here on top. Place the thread spool here, add the spool cap and / follow the guides to show how to wind the thread. Put the thread through the clip, wrap around the knob, checking that the thread is pulled tight enough. Slide the thread through one of the holes in the bobbin. Making it’s wound in a clockwise direction Then slide the bobbin winder shaft over, holding onto the thread for a moment, and press the presser foot. Check that the thread is feeding evening onto the bobbin. Looks good, now insert the bobbin into the machine. This machine has a top drop in bobbin. (There are also front and side loading bobbins, so check your manual if you need help on that. ) Drop the bobbin, wrap the thread, and put the cover on. The bobbin is ready to go! Now lets thread the machine. Place the spool onto the spindle onto the machine and the thread onto it. Now run the thread through the clip, going down then up, making sure to catch the thread take-up lever, and then down behind this guide. Thread the needle, or if you have an automatic threader, it’s even easier! Just touch the button and pull the thread to the back. Finally – let’s attach a presser foot – on this machine it’s a case of clipping it on by lowering the presser foot using this lever. Grab a scrap of fabric and stitch to test the stitch to make sure the machine is threaded correctly. Looks perfect! If the machine doesn’t stitch properly, rethread the needle and bobbin. It’s easy to miss one of the guides. Now you’re ready to sew! Thanks for reading!
