Abutilon are commonly called Chinese lanterns or Flowering maples. The flowers come in range of colors there are white pink, and of course the multicolored ones such as this one, which is called Abutilon milleri. The name flowering maple comes from the shape of the foliage however this does vary greatly depending on the variety that we’re looking at. The flowers which vary in color hang down on long stems hence the name Chinese lanterns. You will also find varieties with variegated foliage such as this one a deep green splashed with yellow, but as you can see the flowers on this particular plant are going to be red. Abutilons will grow well in full sun to part shade, the warmer the climate the more shade they will take. Abutilons also like a human ritch soil moist but with good drainage. We like to mulch around the plant each year and top dress with a little aged cow manure. Abutilons are very easy to prune all you need to do is to look for a new growth node, such as here and simply prune a little above that growth node. Of course you’ll want to prune to shape and size but that’s up to you to determine how you want the bush to look. You can prune it into a rounded very bushy habit or you can leave it with a more open growth habit. Older plants can be cut back fairly hard and they’ll survive. The best time to prune is when the plant is finished flowering, however in a temperate climate you can prune those plants at just about any time of the year.
